You know that 9 out of 10 startups fail within the first two years, most of the time due to poor planning. Why let that happen if you don’t have to? (via Should you quit your day job and start up? « Start Up Smart!

6 Ways to Gracefully Quit Your Job
- Give notice. Let your employers know you’re going to be leaving so that they can start looking for a replacement. That way you don’t leave them in the lurch, and you can use them as a reference later.
- Get your work in order and train your replacement. Finish off any outstanding projects and let your managers know if there are going to be any deadlines that won’t be met. If someone is hired for your position before you go, make sure she knows how to do everything. Partially so she’ll be able to transition seemlessly, but also so you don’t get a bunch of frantic e-mails and calls at your new job from your old employer asking where things are and how to do things.
- Give out your contact info. Even if you do help with the transition, your employer might still need to contact you. Be nice and don’t make him track you down.
- Start taking your personal stuff home in advance. You want to avoid the cliche of leaving the office holding a cardboard box with your fern peaking out of it. Start bringing your photos, your iphone chargers, your eye mask and slippers (no judgments) home before your last day so you don’t have to worry about forgetting anything.
- Answer your exit interview truthfully, but professionally. Your exit interview could help amend a policy that wasn’t working, or let HR know what else could be improved. And, while you might feel that this is the time to let your boss have it, remember, you might need to use him as a reference in the future. Or–worse–he might end up being your boss again down the line, so you probably shouldn’t call him a moron on paper.
- Grab a beer and get out of there! I mean, come on, that was pretty awesome of Steven Slater. Right?
